Thank you for your interest in Share Membership of Cunninghame Housing Association Ltd. This section of the website gives you information on how to become a £1 Share Member of the Association. You can apply for membership of the Association from the age of 16.
The following shall be qualified to become members:
- Tenants Of The Association
- Service Users Of The Association
- Other People Who Support The Objects Of The Association
- Organisations Sympathetic To The Objects Of The Association
- No member can hold more than one share in the Association.
- Shares cannot be held jointly.
- There is no interest, dividend or bonus payable on shares.
- Under certain criteria £1 shares can be moved.
Being a member of Cunninghame Housing Association entitles you to be involved in the Association’s activities and have a say in how we run our business.
You will:
- Be invited to our Annual General Meeting (AGM) which is held in September each year
- Be invited to any Special General Meeting.
- Be able to vote at our AGM on:
The appointment of the auditor
Any changes to the Association’s rules
Election of the Board of Management members
Other matters which may require a vote - Be able to stand for election to become a member of our Board of Management. To do this another member of the Association must nominate you and you must meet the eligibility to join criteria as detailed in the Association’s rules 37.4 and 43)
- Be able to formally raise matters of general concern at our AGM when the Board of Management members are present, and informally discuss those issues raised after the formal business of the AGM is closed.
- Receive copies of the Association’s Annual Report
- Receive a copy of the Association’s Annual Accounts. Receive Share membership newsletters at least twice per year.
Our Board of Management will, upon receipt of the fully completed membership application form, consider the application at their first available meeting. The Board of Management will not consider applications for membership within the period of 14 days before the date of a general meeting.
All applications must be accompanied by the fee of £1.00. The fee will be refunded in the event of the membership being refused and the applicant will be advised of the reasons for refusal.
Whilst it is the Association’s intention to encourage membership, the Board of Management has absolute discretion in deciding on applications for membership and the following shall constitute grounds for refusal of an application membership.
- where membership would be contrary to the Association’s Rules or policies; or
- where a conflict of interest may exist which, even allowing for the disclosure of such an interest, may adversely affect the work of the Association; or
- where the Board of Management considers that accepting the application would not be in the best interests of the Association
We will write to all applicants as soon as possible after the Board of Management has met:
- Applicants who have been accepted as members will receive a Share Certificate and Welcome and Information Pack containing:
- A welcome letter from the Chairman
- The CHA Rule Book – provided via a link to CHA’s website
- A copy of the most recent Annual Accounts – provided via a link to CHA’s website
- CHA’s most recent Annual Report – provided via a link to CHA’s website
- If the Board of Management has rejected an application, we will advise the applicant of the reasons for our decision and return the applicant’s £1.00 payment
You should notify the Secretary in writing of a change of address within 3 months. This requirement does not apply if you are a tenant and have moved home by transferring your tenancy to another property owned and managed by us.
We will maintain a Register of Members in accordance with our Rules of the Association. The Register will contain details of the members name and addresses, date of membership approval and membership number of each member
You can end your membership by giving the Secretary at our registered office notice in writing. In addition, your membership will end where:
- You are expelled in accordance with the Rules; or
- You change your address but do not notify us of your new address within three months (see Maintaining Membership); or
- You fail to attend, be represented, exercise a postal vote or submit apologies for absence at five consecutive annual general meetings; or
- We receive a complaint about your behaviour prejudicial to our interests and two-thirds of the members voting at a Special General Meeting agree to this. The conditions applying to this procedure can be found in our Rules of the Association.
Membership will also end in the event that a member dies unless the member has nominated a person to who the share should be transferred as outlined in the rules.
The membership register will be regularly updated, to reflect cases where membership has ended. The £1.00 membership fee is not refundable on termination of membership. Access to the Membership Register shall be provided in accordance with the Rules.
