Alan Somerville, Senior Development Officer of Cunninghame Housing Association recently presented a cheque for £1,000 to Dominik Czopek, a young tennis player from Dumfries, his second year award as part of a 3-year sponsorship.

Dominik is a 13-year-old tennis player from Dumfries who is ranked 1st in Scotland in his age group. Dominik has been playing tennis since he was 6 years old. He is a member of Dumfries Tennis Club and travels to Stirling twice a week to train at the Regional Player Development Centre (RPDC) which supports junior players who are considered to have the highest potential for international success and selection for the National Academy and International Junior stage of the player pathway.

Recently, Dominik took part in the Men’s Open category in Yorkshire in June 2024 and secured a win and subsequently played in the Men’s Open in Sunderland where he finished as runner up. Also that month he played, ‘Play Your Way to Wimbledon,’ South of Scotland – County Finals in Prestwick achieving a win and therefore progressing to National finals which are taking place in Wimbledon in August.

Dominik continues to be completely self-funded by the support of his parents however, such a sport can prove costly such as travel and accommodation when taking part in competitions away from home as well as essential equipment. The funding provided by Cunninghame Housing Association continue to support these costs, alleviating the financial burden to allow Dominik to concentrate on progressing in his sport.

The funding for Dominik Czopek came from the Associations “Making Our Communities a Better Place Fund” which operates throughout the year (1st April to 31st March) until the allocated funding is exhausted.

“We are delighted to be able to provide financial support to Dominik, enabling him to continue in his chosen sport where he is demonstrating hard work and determination pays off.”
