Work on the new flats at the site of the former Quarriers Hostel at Green Street in Saltcoats was halted last week as the demolition team discovered a seagull’s nest tucked away in the roof of the building.
The team from George Beattie and Sons found the nest on Monday at the opposite side of the building to where they had been focusing their demolition work.
The hostel is being demolished by the Association to make way for 24 fully accessible flats.
One worker told the Herald: “We noticed that round the front in the roof was a nest. We stopped straight away and called the clerk of works and the SSPCA.”
A spokesperson for Cunninghame Housing Association said they were aware of the situation which has been managed satisfactorily by George Beattie & Sons and the SSPCA
