Did you know that April 28th is Stop Food Waste Day? It’s a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of reducing our food waste. Not only can cutting down on food waste help the environment, but it can also save you some hard-earned cash!
Here are some easy and practical tips to help you lower your food waste:
Plan Your Meals: Before you go to the supermarket, take a few minutes to plan out your meals for the week. This way, you’ll know exactly what ingredients you need and won’t end up buying things won’t use.
Check The Dates: Remember to check the ‘use by’ dates when buying milk and other fresh produce to make sure you get the most out of the product.
Know The Difference In Dates: The ‘best before date’ is a guideline that the supermarkets use to gauge the freshness of food, just because an item in your cupboard has gone over this date doesn’t mean it isn’t edible and should be thrown out.
Store Food Properly: Proper storage can help extend the life of your food. Keep fruits and vegetables in the crisper drawer of your fridge, and store leftovers in airtight containers. Store bread, biscuits and crackers in an airtight bag or container to stop them from going stale.
Get Creative with Leftovers: Instead of letting leftovers go to waste, get creative! Turn last night’s roast chicken into a tasty sandwich for lunch or transform leftover vegetables into a delicious stir-fry.
Use Up Every Bit: Don’t throw away edible parts of food. For example, vegetable scraps and bones from a cooked chicken can be used to make flavorful homemade broth. Stale bread can be turned into croutons or breadcrumbs by putting them in the oven for 10 minutes.
By using these easy and cost effective tips we can work on lowering our environmental impact and save money on our weekly shopping bills!
