On Wednesday 27th July 2022 John Kelly, Chairperson of Cunninghame Housing Association presented a cheque for £1,000 to Pamela Martin, Ann Giebler, Angela Dean and Mary Hood of the Argyle Community Shop in Saltcoats.

The Argyle Community Shop, which is based in Argyle Community Centre, Saltcoats has been operating since November 2021 and is committed to helping the local community of Saltcoats. The Shop gives residents the opportunity to make their money go further by giving them access to good food at a lower cost with its aim being to create a community, for the community, and run by the community.

The Shop is currently run by 6 volunteers and is open every Wednesday from 12pm – 4pm. It aims to provide good quality produce, which helps to enhance residents’ diets and reduce the worry of food poverty and hunger. Given the shop is run by volunteers, it solely relies on external funding and donations.

The funding provided by Cunninghame Housing Association will help towards replenishing stock – a variety of foods such as cereals, and tinned food, freezer items and fresh food such as meat and fish. This was greatly received by the volunteers, given the costs involved in running such a facility.

Given the current climate and the challenges people face with the cost-of-living crisis we are delighted to be able to provide financial assistance to the Argyle Community Shop to support with the running costs involved. It is also important to recognise the volunteers who work tirelessly to provide such a vital service.

JOHN KELLY, Chairperson, CHA

The funding for The Argyle Community Shop came from the Associations “Making Our Communities a Better Place Fund” which operates throughout the year (1st April to 31st March) until the allocated funding is exhausted.
